Experimental study on changes of histology and ultrastructure of the auricular stomach point in rabbits with acute and chronic gastritis. Citation: (Liu 2021)

Dr. Jihong Liu, MD, at the Preventative Treatment Center of the Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Foshan, China, et al. have studied the auricular stomach point of rabbits with acute and chronic gastritis to observe the changes in histological and ultrastructure of the auricular point against those in control groups. Results showed histological changes, including mast cells infiltration, hyperplasia of epidermis and dermis and loosed dense connective tissue, were observed in the tissues of the auricular stomach point in acute group (60%) and in the chronic group (100%). Resulting ultrastructural changes, including reduced desmosomes, cytokeratin filament aggregation and mitochondrial swelling, were also observed. The pathological changes of the auricular points increased with an increase in the pathological score of gastric mucosa. A positive correlation was shown between the severity of gastric mucosa and the pathological changes of histology and ultrastructure on the ear. The individual differences and consistency between the pathological changes and the histological as well as ultrastructure change on the auricular (with individual differences possibly related to the injury and repair mechanism of gastric mucosa), provide objective evidence for the early diagnosis, treatment and prognosis using the auricular point.
