Dr. Baixiao Zhao, Dean of the School of Acupuncture of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), has presented the use of acupuncture in the treatment of epilepsy, stroke aftermath, facial paralysis, aging-related issues, insomnia and depression at the 2018 Symposium on Neurology Integration in Western Medicine and TCM. As former chairman of Auricular Acupuncture Committee for the Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association, Dr. Zhao, through research, presentations, and professional involvement is helping integrate auricular with an appreciation for the affects of acupuncture on neuromodulation. The result of such integrations are collaborations such as those between Dongfang Hospital of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the Epilepsy Center of George Washington University.

In an effort to deepen understanding of auricular medicine, and use of the Vascular Autonomic Signal (VAS) — an autonomic nervous system response palpated on the radial pulse — BUCM has collaborated with the German Academy of Acupuncture (Deutsche Akademie für Akupunktur | DAA e.V.). With funding by the Chinese government, BUCM supported the advancement of auricular medicine understanding through the hosting of presentations by Dr. med. Andreas Wirz and Dr. med. Bahr in Beijing. An expert to the International Standardization Organization of SATCM (ISO/TC249), Dr. Zhao represents leadership in his field by pointing to interest in the potential for VAS to support TCM practice for neurological insight, as he does in this video.
