Vagus Nerve Stimulation Transiently Mitigates Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Rats. Citation: (Zhang 2020)
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a severe side effect of chemotherapeutic agents. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) attenuates neuro-inflammation by activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and thus may attenuate CIPN.
CIAM note: Although this study focuses on direct VNS at the cervical vagus nerve, the research supports a relatively large body of research surrounding related to other VNS, as well as non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), t...
Chronic inflammation in the etiology of disease across the life span. Citation: (Furman, 2019)
Chronic inflammatory diseases have been recognized as the most significant cause of death in the world today, with more than 50% of all deaths being attributable to inflammation-related diseases such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions[2]. Evidence is emerging that the risk of developing chronic inflammation can be traced back to early development, and i...
Intermittent 96-Hour Auricular Electroacupuncture for Hot Flashes in Patients with Prostate Cancer: A Pilot Study (Rich et. al. 2017)
Of 10 men completing the 6-week protocol, all responded with The HRV analysis showed significantly lower low-frequency/high-frequency power ratios in each individual, compared to baseline, that were consistent with the subjective responses.
Vasomotor disturbance, caused by gender hormone withdrawal—either naturally or in patients treated with ADT, as in this study— is a well-defined neurophysiologic condition. Auricular electroacupuncture (AEA) shows potential for supporting significantly lo...
Analgesic Effects of Auricular Acupuncture for Cancer Pain. Citation: (Alimi 2000)
Owing to the fact that analgesic drugs do not always offer adequate pain relief, cancer pain is a difficult problem for clinicians. For over 30 years, auricular acupuncture has been used in pain treatment, and recently has been used for complementary treatment in cancer pain. The authors report results from auricular treatment in a series of 20 patients with cancer pain. Read published research.
